Safety and Human Conduct (SHB) 2024

This week, I hosted the seventeenth Workshop on Safety and Human Conduct on the Harvard Kennedy Faculty. That is the primary workshop since our co-founder, Ross Anderson, died unexpectedly.

SHB is a small, annual, invitational workshop of individuals finding out varied points of the human facet of safety. The fifty or so attendees embody psychologists, economists, laptop safety researchers, criminologists, sociologists, political scientists, designers, attorneys, philosophers, anthropologists, geographers, neuroscientists, enterprise college professors, and a smattering of others. It’s not simply an interdisciplinary occasion; most people listed below are individually interdisciplinary.

Our purpose is all the time to maximise dialogue and interplay. We try this by placing everybody on panels, and limiting talks to 6 to eight minutes, with the remainder of the time for open dialogue. Brief talks restrict presenters’ skill to get into the boring particulars of their work, and the interdisciplinary viewers discourages jargon.

For the reason that starting, this workshop has been probably the most intellectually stimulating two days of my skilled yr. It influences my pondering in numerous and generally stunning methods—and has resulted in some new friendships and sudden collaborations. That is why a few of us have been coming again yearly for over a decade.

This yr’s schedule is right here. This web page lists the contributors and contains hyperlinks to a few of their work. Kami Vaniea liveblogged each days.

Listed below are my posts on the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth SHB workshops. Observe these hyperlinks to search out summaries, papers, and sometimes audio/video recordings of the periods. Ross maintained a very good webpage of psychology and safety assets—it’s nonetheless up for now.

Subsequent yr we will likely be in Cambridge, UK, hosted by Frank Stajano.
